Sola Energy Solutions set for 50 deep retrofits this year

A 1960s cottage in Tipperary is one of the first projects to be deep retrofitted this year by Sola Energy Solutions under Tipperary Energy Agency’s popular SuperHomes scheme, which aims to make it easy for homeowners to undertake a deep energy upgrade by managing the entire retrofit process.

The upgrade, funded by SEAI’s Deep Retrofit programme, is one of the first in what Sola expect to be a busy year.

The retrofit works included external wall, floor and attic insulation, new doors and double glazed windows throughout, a new 8.5kW Mitsubishi heat pump with underfloor heating, plus solar PV panels and the installation of Aereco demand controlled ventilation to ensure a consistent supply of fresh air inside the house.

It also featured a new wood burning stove and an LED lighting upgrade throughout. The house was also extended at the time of the upgrade.

The retrofit work will bring the BER of the house up from a G rating prior to retrofit to an A3 minimum, in accordance with the requirements of SEAI.

Speaking to Passive House Plus, Paul O’Brien of SOLA Energy Solutions said that the company carried out 32 deep retrofits last year, but expects to do over 50 this year. While the SEAI scheme mandates an airtightness score of at least 5m3/hr/m2, Paul also said Sola always aims to achieve 3 m3/hr/m2 and has delivered results as good as 1.6 m3/hr/m2.

Sola Energy Solutions is one of the main contractors under the SuperHomes scheme.
